How should I often bathe my French Bulldog puppy and what do they need for grooming?

A new puppy parent often asks questions on the grooming needs of their new baby.  A countless of grooming products are available on the market. Some are better than the others, some can even cause your bull allergies. It is not easy to steer through them if you clearly do not have an idea about them. The safest way is to opt for more natural products that have oatmeal in them. The goods which have been around for the longest time. The best supply will be the breeder.

It is important to first understand your frenchies bathing and grooming requirements before doing this and also launch a routine that you will follow regularly. A grooming routine ensures that your French bulldog pup is used to the routine and most importantly enjoys bathing and grooming as it matures to adulthood.

Bathing

Since pups are tiny and their body clocks as the internal regulation of the natural temperature body systems are not entirely mature, so they easily catch chills. This is in the case of the French bulldog puppies as they only have one topcoat unlike most dog breeds that have 2 coats, a top and under coat to keep them warm and cozy. Consequently, 2 very important things to note while making a decision on the bath schedules of your French bulldog puppy. First of all, is the frequency of baths and secondly a thorough post bath drying down. 

Most pet owners choose to bathe their French bulldog puppy with soap and water once in a month or once in every two weeks or so. A dry shampoo in between that is a good way to maintain hygiene of your frenchies. Dry shampoo is a good tool, but it is the most important thing to choose the right ones well. It is not really the best way to keep the puppy clean, a quick bath is rather a better way than a dry shampoo. But some people prefer it because it is very convenient.  In the case that your French bulldog puppy is dirty after a play outside he will need a bath even an unscheduled one. Your vet is a good person to check with for advice on the frequency of baths. It’s also a good idea to not use detergent or any harsh chemicals, antiseptics or anti pest shampoos to bathe your French bulldog puppy. Some washing soap such as “Dawn” can also be used for it is very effective and washes off the dirt and grease quite easily.

The best thing is to stick to dog products made especially for them including:

• shampoo

• soaps

• moisturizers

• antiseptics and

• anti pest sprays /medications

prescribed by your vet. Of course, there is nothing like natural products which are the best. Don’t try any homemade remedies unless they come from an experienced pet owner. Secondly it is very important to thoroughly dry up your Frenchies although most dogs shake off excess water as soon as they come out from their bath but in case of younger pups like your French bulldog puppy it’s a good idea to own a bath towel to pat dry the French bulldog puppy too.

During the bath session, make sure that the water will not enter into puppy’s ears. Cotton balls is what I use to put into the ears, of course, not deep, but to protect from water. Also, folding the ears will work well, when you are washing the puppy.

The next thing on our schedule are the grooming needs which would include the brushing of the French bulldog pup’s coat, checking eyes, brushing teeth and checking gums and clipping nails.

Teeth

Teeth should always be clean and free from any parasites and deposits of food. The gums should be pink and healthy. A Regular brush of teeth is important as it is also to get your French bulldog pup used to you placing your hand inside their mouth or opening their mouth. This will help with easy brushing/cleaning of teeth and giving medication as your French bulldog puppy grows to adulthood. In case frenchies is not used to this although they are typically sweet tempered, they can maybe snap at you or even bite you when you do this later as they are older. There are products available also on the market which you can add to their water supply. It is very helpful to the gums and cleans their teeth. It is called Oxyfresh, it works very well, and I have been using it for years. Even if you stop using it for a while and then plaque starts to build up and bad breath—a few days of using it, will fix it right up.

Coat

The coat of the French bulldog puppy should be shiny and soft when you touch. When grooming you need to look out for:

• parasites

• wounds

• abnormal swellings

• patchiness

Brushing is one way to reduce fur shedding too.

Nails

Trimming of nails regularly is vital for the wellbeing of your French bulldog, your furniture and your own body to avoid scrapes all over. You could do this using the proper pet nail clipping tools yourself at home or can choose a grooming professional for an appointment at home and take care of this for you. If you walk a lot with your dog, often the nails will be short just because of the hard surface. Some of my dog’s nails are short from just walking on a hard surface, but some of them I must trim regularly.
